Club history

Watford Football Club was formed on 1 May 1898 through the amalgamation of two local sides, Watford St Mary's and West Hertfordshire, bringing an end to years of rivalry between rival teams in the town. After spells at grounds including Cassio Road, the club settled at Vicarage Road in 1922, which has remained its home ever since. In 1959, on adopting yellow, black and red colours reflecting the Hertfordshire county arms, supporters voted to rename the team "the Hornets."

The club's transformative era began in 1976 when musician Sir Elton John, a lifelong fan, became chairman, investing heavily and appointing Graham Taylor as manager. Under Taylor, Watford achieved one of English football's most remarkable rises, climbing from the old Fourth Division to the First Division in five seasons and finishing runners-up in the top flight in 1982-83 in only their second season back among the elite -- while also reaching the FA Cup final in 1984, losing to Everton. A UEFA Cup campaign followed. Elton John's continued patronage, including a second spell as chairman in the 1990s alongside manager Graham Taylor's return, cemented his status as the club's most celebrated figure.

Since 2012 the Italian Pozzo family has owned Watford, restoring the club to the Premier League on several occasions (2015, 2021, 2022) but with a pattern of rapid managerial turnover and equally swift relegations back to the Championship, reflecting a volatile modern era after the stability of the Taylor years.
