Game context

Super Bowl LIV delivered the Kansas City Chiefs their first championship in 50 years, since Super Bowl IV following the 1969 season, capping a season built around 24-year-old quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the reigning NFL MVP, and it did so via another furious fourth-quarter comeback, continuing a theme of dramatic finishes that had defined the Mahomes-era Chiefs' entire playoff run that postseason (Kansas City had trailed by 24, 10 and 10 points in three straight postseason games before winning all of them). San Francisco controlled most of the game, building a 20-10 lead entering the fourth quarter behind a physical running game led by Raheem Mostert and a defensive front that repeatedly pressured Mahomes, plus a trick-play touchdown reception that helped stake San Francisco to its early cushion. With the 49ers seemingly in control, Mahomes engineered a stunning rally over the final seven minutes. On third-and-15 from his own 35 with San Francisco still leading, Mahomes found Tyreek Hill for a 44-yard gain that reset Kansas City's title hopes, then hit Travis Kelce for a go-ahead-setting touchdown two plays later to cut the deficit, and the Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points in the final quarter. Damien Williams capped the rally with a touchdown catch and, after a Chiefs defensive stop, an insurance touchdown run, as Kansas City completed the comeback for a 31-20 victory. Mahomes finished 26 of 42 for 286 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and a rushing score, and was named Super Bowl MVP, becoming the youngest quarterback to win the award in the Super Bowl era at that time. The championship launched what has become one of the sport's defining modern dynasties: Kansas City, under head coach Andy Reid — who won his first championship in his 21st season as an NFL head coach, ending years of near-misses and playoff heartbreak in both Philadelphia and Kansas City — would go on to reach five of the following six Super Bowls, winning three more. For San Francisco and second-year head coach Kyle Shanahan, the collapse was his second gut-wrenching Super Bowl defeat after also serving as offensive coordinator during Atlanta's 28-3 collapse three years earlier, a coincidence that drew wide notice and additional scrutiny of his fourth-quarter play-calling and clock management. Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco's quarterback, was largely a non-factor as the 49ers leaned on their running game and defense, attempting only eight second-half passes. Played before 62,417 fans at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Super Bowl LIV is remembered as the coronation of the Mahomes era and the launching point of the Chiefs' sustained championship run.
