Franchise history

The Los Angeles Rams' current era is a return chapter for a franchise with deep LA roots: the Rams first relocated to Los Angeles from Cleveland in 1946, becoming the first NFL team on the West Coast, and won the 1951 NFL championship before departing for St. Louis under owner Georgia Frontiere in 1995. In St. Louis, the "Greatest Show on Turf" Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV in January 2000 behind Kurt Warner and coach Dick Vermeil, but the team declined badly in the years that followed.

Owner Stan Kroenke, who gained full control of the franchise, engineered the Rams' relocation back to Los Angeles for the 2016 season after the NFL approved the move in January of that year, ending a two-decade absence of NFL football in the nation's second-largest media market (the San Diego Chargers followed a year later). The Rams played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum from 2016 through 2019 while Kroenke financed construction of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, a roughly $5 billion venue that opened in 2020 and which the Rams share with the Chargers.

The hiring of 30-year-old Sean McVay as head coach in January 2017 quickly reversed the team's fortunes, and the Rams reached Super Bowl LIII after the 2018 season, losing to New England 13-3. A bold, aggressive front-office approach culminated in the blockbuster 2021 trade for quarterback Matthew Stafford, which fueled a run to Super Bowl LVI in February 2022 — a 23-20 win over Cincinnati played at SoFi Stadium, making the Rams just the second franchise to win a Super Bowl on its home field.
