Franchise history

Tim Mara and Billy Gibson secured an NFL franchise for New York on August 1, 1925, paying a reported $2,500 franchise fee; the club adopted the name 'Giants' to link itself with the city's popular baseball team of the same name, and today remains legally incorporated as the 'New York Football Giants, Inc.' The Giants wear blue as their primary color, giving rise to the nickname 'Big Blue,' alongside monikers like 'G-Men.' The franchise has called six stadiums home: the Polo Grounds (1925-1955), Yankee Stadium (1956-1973), Yale Bowl (1973-1974), Shea Stadium (1975), Giants Stadium (1976-2009), and MetLife Stadium (2010-present), which it shares with the Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Giants were an early NFL power, winning championships in 1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956 and appearing in numerous title games through the 1940s-60s behind stars like Frank Gifford and Y.A. Tittle. A long postseason drought followed before Bill Parcells's rugged 'Big Blue Wrecking Crew' defenses, led by Lawrence Taylor, delivered Super Bowl XXI and XXV titles. Tom Coughlin later guided New York to two more championships built on stunning upsets of previously unbeaten Patriots teams — Super Bowl XLII's 'Manning to Tyree' helmet-catch victory and a Super Bowl XLVI rematch — with quarterback Eli Manning as both games' MVP.

The Giants' oldest and fiercest rivalry, dating to 1933, is with the Philadelphia Eagles, complemented by long-standing NFC East battles against Dallas and Washington.
