Franchise history
The Eagles were founded on July 8, 1933, when Bert Bell and Lud Wray purchased the assets of the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets for a $2,500 NFL franchise fee, bringing NFL football back to Philadelphia. The team's name was chosen as a tribute to the Blue Eagle emblem of the National Recovery Administration, the New Deal agency created that same year under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Eagles wore kelly green for decades before switching to the darker "midnight green" (along with black and silver accents) in 1996.
The franchise's early decades were largely lean, but a stretch of success arrived in the late 1940s: under coach Greasy Neale and stars like Steve Van Buren and Chuck Bednarik, Philadelphia won consecutive NFL championships in 1948 and 1949, then added a third title in 1960 behind quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, upsetting Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers in the championship game. That 1960 title began what became one of the NFL's longest championship droughts, as the Eagles cycled through mostly middling and losing teams over the following decades, playing at Franklin Field and then Veterans Stadium from 1971 to 2002.
Jeffrey Lurie bought the team in 1994, and the hiring of Andy Reid in 1999 launched a sustained era of contention, including five NFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl XXXIX loss to New England following the 2004 season. The Eagles, now playing at Lincoln Financial Field (since 2003), finally won their first Super Bowl in February 2018 (Super Bowl LII, over New England) under coach Doug Pederson and quarterback Nick Foles, ending the 57-year title drought, and added a second championship after the 2024 season.
