TBBTampa Bay Buccaneers

Franchise history

The Buccaneers were awarded to Tampa as an NFL expansion franchise in 1974 and began play in 1976, taking their name and pirate-themed identity from Tampa's Gasparilla festival, which celebrates a legendary local pirate legend, and adopting the winking "Bucco Bruce" logo and creamsicle-orange color scheme that became a symbol of the team's early futility. The expansion Buccaneers lost their first 26 games, an NFL record, before finally winning in 1977. Under coach John McKay, the team improbably reached the NFC Championship Game in just its fourth season (1979), and made the playoffs again in 1981 and 1982, but a long stretch of losing seasons followed through the 1980s and 1990s, during which the team played at Tampa Stadium.

A turning point came with the 1995 hiring of general manager Rich McKay and coach Tony Dungy, whose "Tampa 2" defensive scheme, built around Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, and John Lynch, restored the franchise to relevance and a new red-and-pewter color scheme with a skull-and-crossed-swords logo debuted in 1997, the same year the team moved into Raymond James Stadium. After Dungy was replaced by Jon Gruden in 2002, the Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII that season, defeating Dungy's former Oakland Raiders team behind a dominant defense. Ownership passed from the Culverhouse family to the Glazer family in 1995, who oversaw that title. The franchise endured another lengthy postseason drought afterward before Tom Brady's arrival in 2020 sparked a Super Bowl LV championship on the Buccaneers' home field.
