Franchise history

The franchise was founded in Boston in 1932 as the Boston Braves, sharing both its name and stadium with the baseball team of the same name. In 1933, owner George Preston Marshall renamed the club the Boston Redskins and moved home games to Fenway Park; the team relocated again in 1937 to Washington, D.C., becoming the Washington Redskins and playing at Griffith Stadium. Behind rookie quarterback Sammy Baugh, the newly relocated team won the 1937 NFL Championship, and won a second title in 1942, defeating the Chicago Bears. The franchise moved into RFK Stadium in 1961 and, after decades of mixed results, entered its most successful stretch under coach Joe Gibbs and owner Jack Kent Cooke beginning in 1981, winning three Super Bowls (XVII, XXII, and XXVI) across the 1982, 1987, and 1991 seasons behind a rotation of quarterbacks including Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien, and an offensive line nicknamed "The Hogs."

The team moved to a new stadium in Landover, Maryland in 1997 (originally Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, later FedExField), the same period in which Daniel Snyder purchased the franchise in 1999. Sustained success proved elusive afterward, with the club making the playoffs only sporadically and enduring frequent coaching and quarterback turnover through the 2000s and 2010s. The team's rivalry with the Dallas Cowboys, dating to the 1960s, remains among the NFL's most heated. The franchise retired the Redskins name and identity in 2020 amid longstanding criticism that the name and imagery were disparaging to Native Americans, playing briefly as the Washington Football Team before rebranding as the Washington Commanders in 2022.

Sourcing caveat: Sources vary slightly on the exact date of the Boston Braves-to-Redskins renaming (July 1933) and on characterizing the 1937 move as occurring 'for the 1937 season' versus early 1937; these minor date variances do not affect the substantive narrative.
