Club Background
Cornwall RLFC was a professional rugby league club based in Penryn, Cornwall, founded in November 2021 when the Canadian club Ottawa Aces relocated to England amid pandemic-era operating difficulties and rebranded. The club competed in RFL League 1, the sport's third tier, from 2022 until it folded on 2 April 2025 due to financial issues. It played its home matches at the Memorial Ground, Penryn (capacity around 4,000), and recorded no major honours during its short existence.
Club history
Cornwall RLFC's roots lie in Canada. The club was originally purchased from Hemel Stags' RFL membership in March 2019 by a consortium led by Toronto Wolfpack founder Eric Perez, with plans to establish an expansion side, Ottawa Aces, that would eventually join League 1. Entry was repeatedly delayed by due diligence issues and COVID-19 travel restrictions, and in March 2021 Ottawa briefly competed in the North America Rugby League while still targeting a UK League 1 debut. The difficulty of running a British league club from Canada during the pandemic proved unsustainable, and on 2 November 2021 the club withdrew from its North American competition and relocated to Penryn, Cornwall, rebranding as Cornwall RLFC.
The club made its competitive debut in League 1 in 2022, recording its first win on 25 June 2022, a 22-4 victory over West Wales Raiders. Notable signings over its short history included former Leeds Rhinos and Ireland international Anthony Mullally. On 27 November 2024, Eric Perez's ownership group sold the club to businessman Ken Stone, who had Cornish heritage through his father, outlining a 10-year vision built around community ownership and youth development, with home games continuing at the Memorial Ground, Penryn.
Despite the change of ownership, Cornwall RLFC's finances did not stabilise, and the club folded on 2 April 2025. Its final match was a 78-6 home defeat to Whitehaven, a record home loss, shortly after having exited the 2025 Challenge Cup at the first hurdle with a 0-52 loss to North Wales Crusaders on 26 January 2025 at Penryn.
Sourcing caveat: Cornwall RLFC folded on 2 April 2025 and is no longer an active club — this entry describes a defunct organisation, current as of its final 2025 season, rather than an ongoing one. Detailed season-by-season league standings weren't found, and no attendance figures were found for any Cornwall RLFC match, including its 2025 Challenge Cup tie against North Wales Crusaders.
