Club Background
Rochdale Hornets are a rugby league club founded in 1871 in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, and were one of the 22 founding members of the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895. Their major honour is the 1921-22 Challenge Cup, won by beating Hull 10-9 at Headingley, alongside Lancashire County Cups and the 2016 League 1 Championship, achieved by beating Toulouse Olympique in the promotion final. The club plays home matches at the Crown Oil Arena (formerly Spotland Stadium), which it has shared with football club Rochdale A.F.C. since 1988. For the 2026 season Hornets compete in the merged RFL Championship.
Club history
Rochdale Hornets trace their roots to April 1871, when directors from three local clubs met at the Roebuck Hotel in Rochdale town centre to form a senior representative rugby team, settling on the name "Hornets". The club became one of the original 22 clubs to break away and form the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, making them pioneers of the professional rugby league code. From 1894 the club was based at the Athletic Grounds on Milnrow Road.
The 1920s brought the club's golden era: Hornets won the Lancashire League and County Cup in 1919 and reached their solitary Challenge Cup final in 1922, beating Hull 10-9 at Headingley, Leeds. A record attendance of 26,664 was set at the Athletic Grounds during a 1922 Challenge Cup tie against Oldham. The mid-20th century was harder going, with financial crises in 1931 and 1938 and a 1935 fire that destroyed the main stand.
By 1987 both Hornets and Rochdale A.F.C. faced financial collapse; Hornets sold the Athletic Grounds and relocated to Spotland Stadium in 1988, becoming joint owners of the ground alongside the council and Rochdale A.F.C. The club went into administration in 2009 and was restructured as a member-owned cooperative society. On the field, Hornets won the Championship 1 play-off final in 2013 and were crowned League 1 Champions in 2016 after beating Toulouse Olympique. In December 2019 members voted to convert the club into a private limited company, completed under chairman Andy Mazey in June 2020. Hornets went on to spend several seasons in League 1 before the RFL's restructuring merged the Championship and League 1 into a single competition for the 2026 season, in which Hornets, still based at the Crown Oil Arena, now compete.
Sourcing caveat: The exact structure of the merged 2026 Championship/League 1 competition wasn't fully pinned down beyond secondary reporting, and no sourced total games hosted or rugby-specific record attendance for the current Crown Oil Arena ground was found (the verified 26,664 record relates to the club's previous ground, the Athletic Grounds).
