Ground facts

Opened2007 (Construction began in 1984 as a Lagos State project but stalled repeatedly under successive governments; the stadium was finally completed and formally opened in 2007, hosting its first football match (Enyimba vs Asante Kotoko) on 28 May 2007. No former name for this stadium itself could be confirmed in any source checked -- it appears to be, and always to have been, named after Nigerian footballer Teslim Balogun. It is a distinct venue from the older, separate National Stadium, Lagos (opened 1972, also in Surulere), and the two are sometimes conflated in casual sources; this write-up does not rely on any claim specific to that other stadium.)

Name history

    Rugby league history

A multi-purpose national/state stadium in Surulere, Lagos, whose dominant sporting use is football -- home to top-flight Nigerian clubs, national team matches, the 2007 FA Cup final, the 2009 Federation Cup final and the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Rugby league use is a minor, occasional booking: all four recorded matches are from the 2019 Middle East-Africa Championship (2 and 5 October 2019), featuring Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Morocco, with Nigeria's 38-10 win over Morocco the largest margin recorded at the venue. Floodlight information could not be confirmed either way.
