Match report
Played at St Helen's, Swansea, one of Wales' home venues for the tournament. Australia, who went on to win the tournament, were too strong for the hosts, running out 18-6 winners in front of 11,112. Wales's only points came from three goals kicked by captain and fullback David Watkins; they failed to cross the try-line. Australia's win was built on a hat-trick of tries from winger Ian Schubert plus a try from five-eighth John Peard, with Michael Cronin adding three goals.
