After playing
Beetson had an extensive post-playing coaching career: captain-coach of Eastern Suburbs (1977) and Redcliffe (1981); head coach of Queensland in the inaugural State of Origin era (Queensland's first Origin coach, 1980, with further Origin coaching through the 1980s including series wins in 1981-1984); coached Australia briefly (1983); coached Eastern Suburbs again (1985-1988, including a Coach of the Year honour in 1987); and coached Cronulla-Sutherland (1992-1993). He was also the first Aboriginal Australian to captain his country in any sport (Australia, 2nd Test v France, 1973).
