Tournament context

Montreal's Olympic basketball tournament allowed the United States to reassert its dominance after the wrenching, still-disputed 1972 loss to the Soviet Union — though the Soviets themselves did not reach the final this time, eliminated en route by other contenders even after finishing the preliminary round undefeated alongside the Americans. The US, coached by Dean Smith and built around college stars Adrian Dantley, Scott May, Phil Ford, Kenny Carr and Mitch Kupchak, went 5-0 in preliminary group play and advanced through the knockout stage, beating a host Canadian team 95-77 in the semifinal (Scott May scored 24 as the deeper, more talented American roster wore down a Canadian side that Smith bluntly assessed as "an average team that got there through the luck of the draw" compared to the three genuine title contenders left in the bracket). The gold-medal game, on July 27, 1976, saw the United States defeat Yugoslavia 95-74, a result that avenged, at least symbolically, Yugoslavia's stronger showings in the previous two Olympiads (the 1968 final and 1976's own status as a rising European power) and restored the Americans to the top of the podium after the controversial interruption four years earlier. Montreal 1976 carried broader historical weight for Olympic basketball beyond the men's result: it was the first Games at which women's basketball appeared on the Olympic program, with the Soviet Union winning the inaugural women's gold and the United States taking silver — establishing basketball's Olympic footprint as a two-tournament sport for the first time and setting the stage for the eventual global growth of the women's game, whose Olympic history has since become deeply intertwined with, though separate from, the men's competition covered in this dataset. For the American men's program, the 1976 gold represented a return to form after Munich's disputed finish, restoring the psychological sense (however contested by the specific 1972 result) that Olympic basketball gold was still, at bottom, the United States' to lose. It also marked the last Olympic tournament played entirely under the older amateur-only international eligibility rules before the political upheavals of the next two Games — the US-led boycott of 1980 and the Soviet-led retaliatory boycott of 1984 — scrambled the sport's competitive picture for most of the following decade. Dantley, May and several of their 1976 teammates went on to substantial NBA careers, cementing this roster's reputation, in retrospect, as one of the last great US Olympic teams assembled entirely from college talent before the sport's later transition toward NBA-professional Olympic rosters.
