Game context
Super Bowl LV made history before a single play from scrimmage: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hosting the game at their home stadium, became the first team ever to play — and then win — a Super Bowl on its home field, a quirk of the NFL's rotating hosting rules that had assigned Tampa the game years in advance. The game was played amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with attendance capped at a limited 24,835, including roughly 7,500 vaccinated healthcare workers admitted as guests of the league, a stark visual reminder of the unusual circumstances surrounding the entire 2020 season. On the field, Tampa Bay, led by 43-year-old Tom Brady in his first season after leaving New England, thoroughly outplayed the defending-champion Kansas City Chiefs and reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes. Kansas City's offensive line was ravaged by injuries and further undermined by Tampa Bay's ferocious pass rush, led by Shaquil Barrett, Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh; Mahomes was pressured on a Super Bowl-record 29 of his 56 dropbacks and never found any rhythm, finishing 26 of 49 for 270 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. Tampa Bay built a 21-6 halftime lead, with Brady throwing three touchdown passes — two to tight end Rob Gronkowski, his longtime New England teammate reunited with him in Tampa — and Antonio Brown adding a third receiving score. Kansas City compounded its struggles with costly penalties, committing eight infractions for 95 yards in the first half alone as the Chiefs' offensive linemen, several playing out of position due to injuries, repeatedly held to avoid sacks. Tampa Bay's defense shut Kansas City out entirely in the second half, and the Buccaneers added two more scores to complete a decisive 31-9 win. Brady, who completed 21 of 29 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns, was named Super Bowl MVP for a record fifth time, extending his own all-time record and capturing his seventh championship ring overall — more than any single NFL franchise had won at that point in the sport's history. The victory, in Brady's first season away from Bill Belichick and New England after two decades together, was widely viewed as a definitive answer to preseason questions about how much of the Patriots' dynasty had been attributable to Brady individually versus the coach-quarterback partnership as a whole. Leonard Fournette, signed off the street partway through the season, rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown in a strong complementary performance. For Kansas City and Andy Reid, the lopsided loss denied the Chiefs a repeat title, though the franchise would rebound to win two more championships over the following three seasons.
