Game context
Super Bowl LVI made the Los Angeles Rams the second team, after Tampa Bay a year earlier, to win a Super Bowl in its home stadium, delivered at the brand-new SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, which the Rams shared with the Chargers. Los Angeles had been built for exactly this moment under general manager Les Snead's aggressive, draft-pick-spending "F them picks" team-building philosophy, trading for veteran stars like quarterback Matthew Stafford, receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and, midseason, edge rusher Von Miller and cornerback Von Bell, all in pursuit of an immediate championship. The Rams struck first, with Stafford finding Beckham for a touchdown, then adding a Cooper Kupp touchdown catch to take a 13-3 halftime lead. Cincinnati, in the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance since 1988 and led by second-year quarterback Joe Burrow, roared back in the third quarter with 10 unanswered points, capped by a spectacular 75-yard touchdown catch-and-run by Tee Higgins that gave the Bengals their first lead, 17-13. Cincinnati extended the lead to 20-16 early in the fourth quarter, putting Los Angeles's championship hopes squarely on Stafford and Kupp, the NFL's reigning receiving triple-crown winner (leading the league in catches, yards and touchdowns during the regular season). On fourth-and-1 in Rams territory in the fourth quarter, Kupp himself converted with a 7-yard run out of the backfield, extending a drive that felt do-or-die. Stafford then directed a 15-play, 79-yard march, repeatedly targeting Kupp, before finding him for a 1-yard touchdown with 1:25 left for a 23-20 lead. Cincinnati got the ball back with a chance to answer, but on a critical fourth-and-1, star pass rusher Aaron Donald burst through the Bengals' interior protection to pressure Burrow into an incomplete pass, sealing the Rams' win. Kupp finished with eight catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns — including four catches and the go-ahead score on the winning drive alone — and was named Super Bowl MVP, capping arguably the greatest statistical receiving season in NFL history with the championship to match. The win validated the Rams' win-now roster-building strategy under head coach Sean McVay, who became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl at 36, and gave Stafford, long regarded as one of the league's best quarterbacks never to reach a title with Detroit, his first championship in his very first season with Los Angeles after a trade that offseason. For Cincinnati and Burrow, the near-miss began a stretch of Bengals contention, though the franchise has not returned to the Super Bowl since. Played before 70,048 fans, the game is remembered as validation of aggressive, all-in team construction and of Kupp's historic, MVP-capped season.
