Game context
Super Bowl LVII, the first Super Bowl to feature two Black starting quarterbacks — Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts — and the first Super Bowl matchup of brothers on opposing teams (Kansas City's tight end Travis Kelce against Philadelphia's center Jason Kelce), lived up to its billing as a closely fought, high-stakes duel. Philadelphia dominated the first half, with Hurts accounting for three total touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) to build a 24-14 lead by intermission, powered by an Eagles offensive line that gave him time and a rushing attack, including his signature "tush push" quarterback sneak, that Kansas City struggled to contain all night. Compounding Kansas City's problems, Mahomes re-aggravated a high-ankle sprain suffered earlier in the postseason when Eagles defensive tackle Haason Reddick sacked him late in the first half, forcing him to gut through visible pain and a diminished ability to move for the rest of the game; remarkably, the Chiefs never ran a single offensive snap without him on the field despite the injury. Kansas City clawed back in the second half, with Mahomes finding Kelce and later scoring on a keeper to tie the game, before a Kadarius Toney 65-yard punt return set up another Chiefs touchdown for a 35-27 lead. Philadelphia answered immediately, with Hurts scoring on a 2-yard run and adding the two-point conversion to level the score at 35-35 with under six minutes remaining, setting up a tense final stretch. With the ankle clearly compromising his mobility, Mahomes still managed a crucial 26-yard scramble on Kansas City's decisive drive, and a since-controversial defensive holding penalty on Philadelphia's James Bradberry, called on a third-down incompletion, extended the Chiefs' possession and allowed Kansas City to run more clock before Harrison Butker's game-winning field goal made it 38-35 with eight seconds left, too little time for Philadelphia to respond. Mahomes, who finished with 182 passing yards, three total touchdowns, and the gutsy scramble despite his injury, was named Super Bowl MVP for the second time. Hurts set a Super Bowl record for quarterback rushing yards with 70 on 15 carries to go with 304 passing yards and three total touchdowns, an outstanding performance in a losing effort. The win gave Kansas City its second championship in four seasons and further cemented Mahomes and Andy Reid as the era's defining coach-quarterback pairing, while Philadelphia's near-miss set the stage for the Eagles' championship two years later. Played before 67,827 fans at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Super Bowl LVII is remembered as one of the closest and most competitive Super Bowls of the decade.
