Game context

Super Bowl XXI pitted a Giants team that had not won a championship since 1956 against a Broncos team led by a 26-year-old John Elway making his first Super Bowl start. The game opened tight: Denver struck first on a field goal, and after New York answered with a Joe Morris touchdown run, Elway put together an improvised, broken-play scramble for a touchdown that made it 10-9 Broncos at halftime, still the narrowest halftime margin in Super Bowl history at the time. Whatever suspense existed evaporated in the third quarter. The Giants defense, which had allowed just three combined points across two playoff wins that postseason, throttled Denver's offense, holding it to two net rushing yards in the period, while quarterback Phil Simms turned in one of the most efficient passing performances the game has ever seen. Simms finished 22 of 25 for 268 yards and three touchdowns, an 88 percent completion rate that broke both the Super Bowl and NFL postseason records and gave him a passer rating north of 150. He was nearly unstoppable in the second half, and New York outscored Denver 30-10 after intermission to turn a nervy game into a rout. Running back Joe Morris contributed on the ground and through the air, and the Giants' defensive front, anchored by Lawrence Taylor and coordinated by a young Bill Belichick, smothered Denver's running game and forced Elway into desperate improvisation for most of the second half. Elway still finished with 304 passing yards and a rushing score, and receiver Vance Johnson caught a touchdown, but Denver could not sustain drives against New York's pressure. The game included a controversial officiating moment when an apparent Denver first-down catch by Clarence Kay was overturned, a call Broncos players and coach Dan Reeves protested loudly afterward, though it did little to change the game's ultimate trajectory. New York's blowout second half, sparked by Simms and a suffocating defense, buried Denver by a final margin of 39-20, and Giants coach Bill Parcells was doused with the celebratory Gatorade shower that would soon become a fixture of championship coverage, poured by linebacker Harry Carson. Amid the on-field celebration, backup wide receiver Phil McConkey retrieved a police officer's pistol that had fallen onto the turf during the chaos, a strange footnote to an otherwise triumphant afternoon for the franchise. The win capped New York's first championship in three decades and validated Parcells' construction of a defense-first roster around Taylor, Harry Carson, and a physical front seven, paired with Simms' efficient, mistake-free quarterbacking. For Denver, the loss was the first of what would become a painful pattern: the Broncos returned to the Super Bowl the very next season and were routed 42-10 by Washington, part of a string of lopsided Super Bowl defeats in the late 1980s that would not be erased until Elway, in the twilight of his career, finally won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999. Super Bowl XXI remains remembered as the coronation of the Parcells-Taylor Giants and one of the most efficient quarterbacking performances in championship game history.
