1925 NFL Season — Final Standings

Final standings for the league's most disputed championship: Pottsville Maroons finished with the NFL's best on-field record (10-2-0) but were suspended by league president Joe Carr for playing an unauthorized exhibition game in Frankford Yellow Jackets' exclusive Philadelphia territory (a 9-7 win over a Notre Dame All-Star team at Shibe Park), forfeiting their championship eligibility. The Chicago Cardinals, with the best remaining record (11-2-1), were awarded the title by default, though Cardinals owner Chris O'Brien reportedly refused to publicly accept it at the time, uncomfortable with how it had been won — the Cardinals also had their own late-season scandal, fielding four ineligible high-school players under assumed names in a lopsided win that briefly threatened their own standing before the league settled on fines rather than further sanction. The dispute has never been resolved in Pottsville's favor: NFL owners voted against revisiting the title in both 1963 (12-2) and 2003 (30-2), and the Cardinals remain the sport's official 1925 champion to this day, even as many historians and Pottsville's local supporters continue to regard the Maroons as the rightful winner.
