Club Background

Barrow Raiders are a rugby league club based in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, with roots tracing to 1875 as a rugby football club, before switching to rugby league (Northern Union) in 1897. They won the Challenge Cup in 1955, beating Workington Town 21-12 at Wembley, and have claimed second-tier league titles including the 1975-76 and 1983-84 Second Division championships and the 2009 Co-Op Championship. The club plays home matches at Craven Park (currently sponsored as the Speed Competitions Stadium — a different ground from Hull KR's identically named Craven Park) and competes in the Championship, English rugby league's second tier.

Club history

Barrow's rugby-playing roots go back to 1875, when the club played its first recorded match against Royal Grammar School, Lancaster at Cavendish Park on Barrow Island. In April 1897 the club switched from rugby union to the newly formed Northern Union, joining the Second Division of the Lancashire Senior Competition and winning it in its first season. The club moved grounds twice in its early decades, from Cavendish Park to Little Park in Roose in 1914, before settling at Craven Park in 1931.

The club's greatest moment came on 30 April 1955, when Barrow beat Workington Town 21-12 in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley in front of a crowd of over 66,000, with captain Willie Horne lifting the trophy. Further Second Division titles followed in 1975-76 and 1983-84.

In 1995, coinciding with rugby league's switch to a summer season, the club rebranded as Barrow Braves, and between 1997 and 2002 it operated in a formal merger with Carlisle as Barrow Border Raiders, before separating and reverting to the Barrow Raiders name. The club continued to compete in the lower tiers of English rugby league through the Super League era, winning the Co-Op Championship in 2009. Barrow Raiders remain based at Craven Park, renamed the Speed Competitions Stadium in March 2026 under a new club sponsorship agreement. As of the 2025-26 season the club competes in the Championship, the second tier of English rugby league.

Sourcing caveat: The exact effective date the Craven Park ground formally adopted the 'Speed Competitions Stadium' name wasn't specified beyond the March 2026 sponsorship announcement, and no sourced figure for the ground's total games hosted was found (its own sourced record attendance is 16,045, for Australia vs Barrow, 11 September 1952).
