Club Background

Goole Vikings RLFC are an English rugby league club based in Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, established in 2018 as a community club, and considered the spiritual successors to the original Goole rugby league club, which played at the same Victoria Pleasure Grounds site from 1883 until disbanding in 1902. The Vikings have no major honours to date, having been admitted to the professional ranks in December 2024 after progressing through the amateur Yorkshire Men's League. As of the 2026 season they compete in the RFL Championship, having been promoted after finishing seventh in their debut League One campaign in 2025, and play home matches at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds on Carter Street, Goole.

Club history

Goole Vikings were founded in 2018 as a community rugby league club in the East Riding town of Goole, which had been without a senior rugby league side since the original Goole club folded in 1902 after struggling financially in the Northern Rugby League. That earlier club, formed in 1879 as a rugby union side before switching codes in 1898, was briefly notable for a giant-killing Yorkshire Cup win over Leeds in 1893, but disbanded following a single, difficult season in the Yorkshire Senior Competition.

The modern Vikings began life in the amateur Yorkshire Men's League, progressing through its divisions while playing at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds — the same Carter Street venue used by the pre-1902 club. In 2024 the club successfully applied to join the professional ranks, with the RFL Board judging their bid the strongest of three applications received that summer, and the Rugby League Council formally admitted them to RFL membership at its December 2024 meeting.

Goole Vikings made their professional debut in Betfred League One in 2025 under head coach Scott Taylor, a former Hull FC player, with ex-Super League forward Brett Ferres as captain. The highlight of that inaugural season was a 17-10 Challenge Cup second-round upset over Championship side London Broncos in January 2025; the Vikings went on to finish seventh in the League One table. On the back of that debut campaign, Goole were promoted into the restructured Betfred Championship for the 2026 season, continuing to play at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.

Sourcing caveat: As of the 2026 season Goole Vikings compete in the RFL Championship, having been promoted after their 2025 League One debut. No sourced figure for the Victoria Pleasure Grounds' total games hosted or record attendance was found.
