Club Background
West Wales Raiders trace their lineage to South Wales Scorpions, founded in December 2009 and admitted to the professional third tier for the 2010 season, created to fill the gap left when Crusaders relocated from Bridgend to Wrexham. The club spent its first decade as a nomadic, financially fragile outfit, ground-sharing across South Wales before finally settling. In 2017 the club was renamed South Wales Ironmen and relocated to Stebonheath Park, Llanelli under new owner Andrew Thorne, then relaunched as West Wales Raiders for the 2018 League 1 season. The club struggled competitively throughout, finishing bottom or near-bottom most seasons, and withdrew from League 1 and the Challenge Cup in December 2022, seeking new ownership — no source found confirms a return to active professional competition since.
Club history
South Wales Scorpions were established in December 2009 and entered the sport's third tier for the 2010 season, filling the vacancy left when the original Bridgend-based Crusaders moved up to Super League and relocated to Wrexham, taking the "Crusaders" identity with them. The Scorpions never secured a permanent home ground: they played at The Gnoll in Neath from 2010-2013, then moved through Llynfi Road in Maesteg (2014), Parc Dyffryn Pennar in Mountain Ash (2015), Virginia Park in Caerphilly (2016), and The Wern in Merthyr Tydfil (early 2017) — a pattern driven by financial instability and lack of a committed home venue. Wales Rugby League took over operational control of the club in 2014 after founding owner Phil Davies stepped down. On the field, the club consistently finished in the lower reaches of the table, with no major honours documented in sources reviewed.
In 2017 the club was renamed South Wales Ironmen, and mid-season it relocated to Stebonheath Park in Llanelli. In July 2017, Andrew Thorne — an existing amateur-club owner in the Llanelli area — bought the Ironmen in an RFL-approved takeover, committing to keep the team at Stebonheath Park. The club was then rebranded West Wales Raiders for the 2018 season, in League 1.
On the field, West Wales Raiders struggled badly: they finished bottom or near-bottom of League 1 nearly every season from 2018-2022 (including a widely reported 0-144 defeat to York City Knights in April 2018, and a winless 2021 season), and in 2022 won just 1 of 20 matches while conceding over 1,000 points. On 22 December 2022 the club announced withdrawal from League 1 and the Challenge Cup for 2023, citing the unsustainable personal financial and time burden of running a League 1 club, and said they were seeking new ownership rather than planning their own return.
Sourcing caveat: West Wales Raiders withdrew from League 1 in December 2022 and do not appear in the 2025 RFL League One team list — no source confirms a return to active professional competition since, so this page describes a club whose current playing status is unconfirmed/likely dormant, not an active League 1 side. No documented trophies, promotions, or notable on-field achievements were found for any era of the club.
