Name history
Rugby league history
Marsa Complex in Malta hosted the country's first-ever rugby league home international on 22 October 2005, a 36-6 win over England Lionhearts watched by around 500 people and covered by all three national television networks -- a match Wikipedia credits as partly the catalyst for continued rugby league development in Malta. The Malta squad that day was primarily Australian-based players of Maltese heritage, many visiting the island for the first time; the match prompted the Malta Rugby Football Union to set up a local development office with support from the Australian-Maltese Chamber of Commerce. Further European Championship fixtures against Greece, Ukraine, Bulgaria and the Netherlands followed through 2025.
