Ground facts

Opened8 October 1933, inaugurated as Stadio del Littorio; renamed Stadio Omobono Tenni on 5 October 1963, three years after the recorded 1960 match (At the time of the January 1960 match, the ground was not called 'Tenni Stadium'. It opened in 1933 as the fascist-era 'Stadio del Littorio', was likely known simply as the municipal stadium through the 1940s-50s, and was only dedicated to motorcycle racer Omobono Tenni on 5 October 1963. Rugby League Project's venue name reflects the modern, post-1963 name rather than the name in use at the time of the match; the exact name used in January 1960 is not confirmed.)

Name history

  • Stadio del Littorio — 1933 to the fall of Fascism, around 1943
  • Stadio Comunale (di Treviso), likely — mid-1940s to 1963, exact usage and dates not fully confirmed
  • Stadio Omobono Tenni — since 5 October 1963, named for motorcycle road racer Omobono Tenni of Treviso, who died in a 1948 racing accident

Rugby league history

This ground hosted the 37th and final match of the Australian Kangaroos' 1959-60 tour: on 24 January 1960, the day after their first Padua fixture, Australia beat Italy 67-22 in front of 3,105 fans, the only match Rugby League Project records at the venue. It is a notable case of a rugby league international staged at a ground built for and primarily used by Italian football, in one of the earliest attempts to establish the code in Italy - and the venue's modern name, honouring a motorcycle racer, was not adopted until three years after this match was played.
