Rugby league history

Windsor Park hosted the opening match of Group D at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup on 28 October 2000, when Ireland beat Samoa 30-16 in heavy rain in front of 3,207 spectators - the only match Rugby League Project records at the venue. The result was part of an unbeaten Group D run for Ireland, who reached the quarter-finals before losing to England. An earlier rugby league fixture, Warrington vs Halifax, had also been played there in May 1954, though that match is separate from the one recorded here. Staging a World Cup fixture at Northern Ireland's national football stadium was a rare instance of top-level rugby league at a ground built and used almost exclusively for soccer.
