Match report
Played at Lang Park, Brisbane (rugbyleagueproject.org records the date as 21 June, one day earlier than the tournament's official listing; all other details match). Australia led 18-4 at halftime and cruised to a 26-6 win over France. Australia dominated with six tries to nil, shared between Bob Fulton (2), Mark Harris (2), Michael Cronin and Tim Pickup, while France's points came entirely from the boot of José Calle.
Scrums were fairly even and the penalty count was level at 10-10. Australia's Gary Stevens withdrew before the match with a training injury and was replaced by John Payne in a reshuffled lineup; Payne and Chris Anderson ended up as non-playing reserves on the day.
