1962-63 NBA Season Standings
The Philadelphia Warriors relocated to San Francisco this season, and the Chicago Packers were renamed the Chicago Zephyrs, keeping the league at nine teams. Boston again won the Eastern Division and its fifth straight NBA title, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 4-2 in the Finals despite Elgin Baylor and Jerry West's strong play, with the deciding Game 6 requiring overtime before the Celtics prevailed. Wilt Chamberlain, now with San Francisco after the franchise's cross-country move, again led the league in scoring, following up his historic 50-points-per-game season with another dominant scoring campaign. Bob Cousy announced this would be his final season as a player, closing out a Hall of Fame Celtics career that included six championships and thirteen All-Star selections; he would go on to coach at Boston College and later in the NBA. The Chicago Zephyrs, one year removed from their expansion debut, still struggled to a losing record in the West.
Sourcing caveat: The Philadelphia Warriors relocated to San Francisco this season ("San Francisco Warriors"). The Chicago Packers were renamed the Chicago Zephyrs. Still 9 teams total, 4 East / 5 West, using "Division" terminology historically.
