Club Background
Balmain was one of the nine clubs present at the January 1908 foundation of the NSWRL, formed when the district's rugby union strength switched codes en masse, and were based at Leichhardt Oval from 1934 until the club's 1999 merger. The waterfront "Tigers," named for their thin black-and-gold striped jerseys, became one of the code's great heartland clubs before financial pressure forced the controversial merger with Western Suburbs to form the Wests Tigers.

Club history
Balmain was one of the nine clubs present at the foundation of the New South Wales Rugby Football League in January 1908, formed when much of the district's rugby union playing strength switched codes en masse to join the breakaway competition. The Tigers played their first premiership match on 20 April 1908, thrashing Western Suburbs 34-0, and were based at Leichhardt Oval, their spiritual home from 1934 until the club's 1999 merger. The "Tigers" nickname arose almost immediately from the thin black-and-gold striped jerseys the players wore in that first 1908 season.
Balmain's early era was defined by sustained success: after a heartbreaking 1909 grand final dispute in which South Sydney was awarded the title after a scheduling protest, the Tigers responded with three consecutive premierships from 1915 to 1917 and further titles in 1919 and 1920. Working-class, waterfront Balmain became one of rugby league's great heartland suburbs, and by the time financial pressures forced its controversial 1999 merger with Western Suburbs to form the Wests Tigers, the club had amassed eleven premierships — trailing only South Sydney and St George on the all-time list.
