Club Background

Doncaster RLFC (nicknamed the Dons) is an English rugby league club founded in 1951 in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, playing their first game on 18 August 1951 against Wakefield Trinity. The club has never won a major national honour but has claimed lower-tier titles including the 2012 Championship One league leaders' shield and playoff final, and were promoted from League 1 in 2023 after beating North Wales Crusaders 18-6 in the playoff final. Doncaster play in the Championship as of the 2025/26 season, sharing the Club Doncaster Sports Village (formerly the Eco-Power Stadium/Keepmoat Stadium) with Doncaster Rovers FC.

Club history

Doncaster RLFC was founded in 1951 and made their competitive debut on 18 August 1951, beating Wakefield Trinity 10-3 at York Road greyhound stadium. The club moved to Tattersfield in 1952, where it played for over four decades, and spent much of the 1950s-1980s toiling at or near the bottom of the league ladder, a struggle chronicled in the 1980 documentary 'Another Bloody Sunday.'

The early 1990s brought a club-record 88-6 win over Nottingham City in September 1991, followed by promotion to the top-flight Premier Division for the only time in the club's history in 1993-94. That single top-flight season proved unsustainable, and on 15 December 1994 the club entered administration; it played its final game at Tattersfield in April 1995 before being liquidated.

The club was reformed later in 1995 as Doncaster Dragons and rebuilt from the bottom divisions. In 2006 it rebranded again as Doncaster Lakers, before reverting to the Doncaster RLFC name and traditional blue-and-gold colours in June 2007, by which point the club had settled at the Keepmoat Stadium (now Club Doncaster Sports Village), sharing the venue with Doncaster Rovers FC under the Club Doncaster group, which took over the club's ownership in 2013. Doncaster's modern era has brought steady progress: the club won the Championship One league leaders' shield and promotion playoff in 2012, and won the League 1 playoff final 18-6 against North Wales Crusaders in 2023 to secure promotion to the Championship, where the club competed in the 2025/26 season.

Sourcing caveat: The venue was renamed from Eco-Power Stadium to Club Doncaster Sports Village effective 30 June 2026; older listings may still show the earlier name. No rugby-league-specific record attendance or total-games-hosted figure was found for a Doncaster RLFC home fixture (the ground's overall record attendance, 15,001, is from a 2008 football match).
