Wakefield Trinity — 2 Super League/British top-flight titles on record (most recently 1967-68).

Club Background

Wakefield Trinity is one of English rugby league's oldest clubs, founded in 1873, and one of the 22 founding member clubs of the Northern Union in 1895. The club has played at Belle Vue, one of the sport's most historic grounds, since 1879. Their honours include two Championship titles (1966-67, 1967-68) and five Challenge Cups (1909, 1946, 1960, 1962, 1963), the bulk clustered in a celebrated "Golden Sixties" era featuring Neil Fox. Trophies have been scarce since — the club were relegated from Super League in 2023 after 24 consecutive top-flight seasons, bounced straight back up, and in 2025 reached the play-offs for the first time in 13 years, finishing 6th before losing the Eliminator 26-10 to Leigh Leopards.

Club history

Wakefield Trinity's roots go back to 1873, one of the oldest rugby clubs in England, and one of the 22 founding members of the Northern Union in 1895, based at Belle Vue since 1879. Its early honour came in 1909, beating Hull 17-0 to win the Challenge Cup, followed by a second Cup win in 1946, beating Wigan 13-12.

The club's peak came in the 1960s. Wakefield won the Challenge Cup in 1960 (beating Hull 38-5) and again in 1962, beating Huddersfield 12-6 at Wembley in front of over 81,000 spectators — a final won entirely through drop goals, with Neil Fox kicking three — and successfully defended the Cup in 1963. The club also won back-to-back Championships in 1966-67 (beating St Helens in a replay) and 1967-68 (beating Hull KR). The separate, famous "Watersplash Final" — remembered for Don Fox's missed match-winning conversion on a rain-soaked pitch — was actually the 1968 Challenge Cup final, an 11-10 loss to Leeds, not a Wakefield win; both matches involved members of the Fox family (Neil starred in the 1962 win, his brother Don suffered the infamous miss in the 1968 defeat) roughly six years apart.

Since 1963, Wakefield's major-trophy cabinet has been largely bare, with play-off appearances (2004, 2009, 2015-2018) rather than titles the modern highlights. In the Super League era the club has more often been associated with relegation battles, most notably the 2015 Million Pound Game survival win over Bradford Bulls, and relegation in 2023 after a 24-year unbroken run in the top flight. Wakefield were promoted straight back and enjoyed a strong 2025 campaign, finishing 6th in Super League to reach the play-offs for the first time in 13 years, before being eliminated 26-10 by Leigh Leopards.

Sourcing caveat: The "Watersplash Final" is a different match from Wakefield's 1962 Challenge Cup win — it was the 1968 final, which Wakefield lost 11-10 to Leeds. The two are easily confused since both involved the Fox brothers. Challenge Cup win years are 1909, 1946, 1960, 1962 and 1963.
