Newcastle Thunder — 0 Super League/British top-flight titles on record.

Club Background

Newcastle Thunder is an English rugby league club with roots going back to 1999, when Gateshead Thunder was founded and competed for one season in Super League before a financially-driven merger with Hull Sharks ended that venture. A new Gateshead Thunder was formed in 2000 and joined the semi-professional ranks, rebranding as Newcastle Thunder in 2015 after relocating from Gateshead to Newcastle. The club's major honour is the National League Two title, won in 2008, along with a League 1 Shield in 2016. Newcastle Thunder currently plays in League One, and as of 2025 is based at Crow Trees Ground in Swalwell, the home of Blaydon RFC.

Club history

Rugby league returned to Tyneside in 1999 when Gateshead was awarded a Super League franchise, founded by Kath Hetherington and Shane Richardson with backing from sponsor Northern Electric & Gas. Playing as Gateshead Thunder at the Gateshead International Stadium ('the Thunderdome'), the club had a memorable debut Super League season under coach Shaun McRae, finishing sixth and recording notable wins over St Helens and Wigan Warriors. Financially, though, the club lost heavily in that single season, and in November 1999 its owners agreed to merge with Hull Sharks, a deal effectively amounting to a takeover of Thunder by Hull F.C. so Hull could retain Super League status.

Fans, organised as the 'Thunderstorm' campaign group, pushed to keep a Gateshead-based club alive, and a reformed Gateshead Thunder was admitted to the Northern Ford Premiership in 2000/2001. The club moved into National League Two by 2003, and won the National League Two championship in 2008 to earn promotion, later reaching Championship status by 2009.

In January 2015, following a takeover by Newcastle Rugby Ltd, the club rebranded as Newcastle Thunder and moved from Gateshead International Stadium to Kingston Park, marking the return of a Newcastle-based professional rugby league club for the first time since the 1930s. The club won the League 1 Shield in 2016. Ownership changed again in the 2020s, with new ownership under former chairman Keith Christie approved by the RFL in December 2023. Newcastle Thunder returned to play at Gateshead International Stadium from 2024 before moving to Crow Trees Ground, home of Blaydon RFC, in Swalwell for the 2025 season, and currently compete in League One.

Sourcing caveat: No club distinctly named 'Newcastle Gateshead Thunder' was confirmed — sourced material shows only Gateshead Thunder (1999 Super League club) → Gateshead Thunder (reformed 2000) → Newcastle Thunder (renamed 2015) — and no sourced figure for Crow Trees Ground's total games hosted or record attendance was found.
