Club Background

Wigan Warriors were founded in 1872, becoming a founding member of the Northern Union in 1895. The club played at Central Park from 1902 until 1999, when they moved to a new stadium now known as the Brick Community Stadium. Wigan are the most decorated club in British rugby league history, with around 21-22 Challenge Cup wins (including a record eight consecutive wins from 1988 to 1995) and around 23-24 total league championships. In the Super League era they have won seven Grand Finals (1998, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2023, 2024), including back-to-back titles under head coach Matt Peet in 2023 and 2024, before losing the 2025 Grand Final 24-6 to Hull KR at Old Trafford.

Club history

Wigan was established in 1872 and became one of the founding clubs of the Northern Union in 1895. The club built a powerhouse reputation across the 20th century, becoming the sport's most successful English club.

The club's most celebrated period came between 1988 and 1995, when Wigan won the Challenge Cup for eight consecutive seasons — a feat unmatched in the competition's history. This era was built around coaches Graham Lowe and John Monie and star players including Ellery Hanley, Shaun Edwards, Andy Gregory and Martin Offiah. A standout result was the 1989 final, a 27-0 win over St Helens.

Wigan played at Central Park from 1902 until 1999, when the club relocated to a new stadium — subsequently known as the JJB Stadium, then the DW Stadium, and today the Brick Community Stadium. In the Super League era, Wigan have won the Grand Final in 1998, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024 — seven titles. Under current head coach Matt Peet, Wigan won back-to-back Grand Finals in 2023 (beating Catalans Dragons 10-2) and 2024 (beating Hull KR 9-2). In 2025 Wigan reached the Grand Final again but lost 24-6 to Hull KR at Old Trafford, as Hull KR completed a historic treble.

Sourcing caveat: Challenge Cup and overall championship totals are reported inconsistently across sources (Challenge Cup wins cited as either 21 or 22; overall championships as 23 or 24, depending on whether certain wartime/emergency competitions are counted) — the exact figures could not be fully reconciled. The seven-title Super League Grand Final list is cross-verified between Wikipedia and the official Super League site and can be treated as confirmed.
