Club Background
Toronto Wolfpack were founded in 2016-2017 as the first-ever transatlantic professional rugby league club, playing home matches at Lamport Stadium in Toronto. Founded by Eric Perez with Australian businessman David Argyle as majority owner, the club entered League 1 (tier 3) in 2017, won the title, and climbed to the Championship, eventually reaching Super League for the 2020 season after beating Featherstone Rovers 24-6 in the October 2019 Million Pound Game. Their sole Super League season was disrupted by COVID-19: the club had finished bottom of the six-team opening phase with zero wins before withdrawing from the competition in mid-2020, citing pandemic-related financial collapse. A November 2020 Super League board vote rejected a reinstatement bid, effectively ending the original club; a reformed ownership group revived the Wolfpack brand in North American semi-pro competition from 2021, but as of this page's last verification it has been dormant, with no matches played since 2023.
Club history
Toronto Wolfpack were conceived by Eric Perez, chairman of Canada Rugby League; the club was publicly announced on 27 April 2016, backed by a group of investors including Australian mining businessman David Argyle as majority owner. Entering League 1 in 2017 under head coach Paul Rowley, Toronto won all 15 regular-season matches and were crowned League 1 champions, earning promotion to the Championship for 2018.
In the Championship, Toronto topped the regular-season table in both 2018 and 2019 but missed automatic Super League promotion in 2018, losing the Million Pound Game 4-2 to London Broncos. Under new head coach Brian McDermott, Toronto finished top again in 2019 and beat Featherstone Rovers 24-6 in the October 2019 Million Pound Game before a record crowd of 9,974, finally securing Super League promotion for 2020.
The club's single Super League season began with the high-profile signing of Sonny Bill Williams in November 2019, but Williams played only five games before COVID-19 suspended the season; Toronto had finished bottom of the opening phase with no wins from six matches. When the season prepared to resume in the UK, Toronto withdrew in July 2020, citing loss of all scheduled home fixtures in Toronto, collapsed matchday/sponsorship revenue, added COVID costs, exclusion from UK furlough support as a non-UK entity, and visa complications. The RFL's Super League participation agreement with Toronto was formally terminated on 4 August 2020, and no team was relegated from Super League that year "for reasons of integrity, player welfare and club solvency." A prospective new owner, Carlo LiVolsi, put forward a reinstatement bid in autumn 2020, but on around 2-3 November 2020 the Super League board voted 8-4 to reject readmission, effectively ending the original club.
Toronto Wolfpack was revived under new ownership on 31 March 2021, playing in the newly formed North American Rugby League, fielding a team for a single match in September 2021. The club then withdrew from that league in June 2023 to run its own "TWP Canada Cup." As of this page's last verification, the club has played no organized matches since that 2023 event, and in September 2024 the organization announced it would forgo a season to plan for a return — with no independent confirmation found of that return having materialised.
Sourcing caveat: Toronto finished BOTTOM of their 2020 Super League opening phase with zero wins, not top of the table as sometimes assumed. The prospective post-2020 owner was Carlo LiVolsi — not any other name sometimes associated with the story, which could not be confirmed by any source checked. The 2017-2020 promotion route was a two-year Championship stint (2018, 2019), not a single-season jump. Current (2025/2026) activity status is genuinely uncertain: sources available to this site only confirm the club was dormant through the 2023 TWP Canada Cup with a stated, unconfirmed intent to return — no independent source confirms an actual 2025 or 2026 season took place. Treat "currently active" as unconfirmed and check for a more current update.
