Club Background
The Western Reds entered the competition in 1995 as an Australian Rugby League expansion club, part of a wave of new franchises meant to spread rugby league beyond NSW and Queensland. Club history
The Western Reds entered the competition in 1995 as an Australian Rugby League expansion club, part of the same wave of new franchises intended to spread rugby league beyond its NSW/Queensland base. When News Limited launched its Super League breakaway in 1995, the Reds' licence went with Super League, and the club played in the separate 1997 Super League Telstra Cup as the "Perth Reds" before the code reunified. Home matches were played at the WACA Ground.
Early crowds were strong (averaging around 13,000), but support eroded sharply while the cost of flying every visiting team across the country to Perth ran up debts reported at around $10 million by the end of 1997. With the post-war NRL needing to cut the competition down to 17 clubs, Super League axed the Perth Reds on 1 October 1997 rather than continue funding an isolated, financially unsustainable franchise. Rugby league in the region was later revived as the semi-professional WA Reds playing in state competitions from 2006.
