Aberdare Athletic Ground
Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales
Aberdare Athletic Ground, Aberdare, Wales — opened In organised sporting use before 1890, 15 rugby league games hosted, home of Aberdare RLFC, for a single season, 1908-09.
Sourcing caveat: Attendance for the historic 1 Jan 1908 match is disputed between sources: two Wikipedia articles give 15,000 (citing gate receipts of £560) while another gives 20,000; the match report itself did not state a figure. This site's own directory records a 15,000 top crowd for the venue, which is presented as the more likely figure while flagging the discrepancy.

Rugby league history
The 1 Jan 1908 Wales v New Zealand match here, drawing sufficient gate receipts (£560) to demonstrate the commercial viability of rugby league in the Welsh valleys, directly inspired the founding of Aberdare RLFC two months later, in March 1908. The club was admitted to the Northern Rugby League that July, played a single, largely unsuccessful season in 1908-09 (finishing 31st of 31 in the Northern Union), and resigned from the league in July 1909 citing financial difficulties, folding shortly after. Today the wider Ynys site is a multi-sport venue including a cricket club, athletics stadium and leisure centre.
Also historically used for association football (Aberdare Athletic F.C., 1893-1928) and has long been home to Aberdare RFC (rugby union, 1890-present) and, since 1968, Aberdare Cricket Club.
