Rugby league history
This site's spelling Althone Stadium reproduces a typo carried on Rugby League Project's own venue page; the correct name, used everywhere else including Wikipedia and StadiumDB, is Athlone Stadium, in the Athlone district of Cape Town. Historically significant as a major venue for Cape Town's coloured community under apartheid, when access to many other stadiums was restricted, it has mainly hosted football and occasional rugby union. Its sole recorded rugby league fixture was a 1993 tour match in which the touring Australian club North Sydney beat a Cape Town representative side 48-6 on 20 October 1993, in front of 1,200 spectators. This fixture is not listed on Rugby League Project's own South Africa national team results pages and could not be independently corroborated beyond Rugby League Project's venue page.
