Bidvest Stadium

Johannesburg (Braampark), Gauteng, South Africa

Bidvest Stadium, Johannesburg (Braampark), South Africa — opened Not confirmed with confidence; a single low-confidence secondary source states 1921, but this could not be corroborated and may actually refer to the founding of Wits University (1922) rather than the stadium structure, 1 rugby league games hosted, home of Bidvest Wits F.C. (association football, Premier Soccer League/South African Premiership), owned by Wits University.

Sourcing caveat: The 1921 opening-date claim found in a single secondary source is unverified and may be conflated with the 1922 founding of Wits University rather than the stadium's actual construction; reported as not confirmed rather than treated as fact.

Name history

  • Milner Park — the broader showground/exhibition-grounds site, pre-university era
  • Milpark Stadium — used at least through 1992, the year of the recorded rugby league match, and the name Rugby League Project cross-references for this venue
  • Bidvest Stadium — current sponsorship name, tied to the Bidvest sponsorship of the Wits University football club; the exact year of the Milpark-to-Bidvest rename is not confirmed

Rugby league history

This venue's only recorded rugby league match, per Rugby League Project, was on 13 November 1992: South Africa beat a touring C.I.S. (Commonwealth of Independent States, representing the former USSR) side 26-30 in front of 2,000 fans, part of a short-lived era of post-Soviet rugby league touring teams visiting South Africa shortly after the country's post-apartheid readmission to international sport. The venue is otherwise known as a football ground -- home of Bidvest Wits F.C. -- and was used as a training venue by the Netherlands national football team during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
