Auckland Domain
Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland Domain, Auckland, New Zealand — opened 1840 (set aside as public land); gazetted as a reserve in 1844, 7 rugby league games hosted, home of no fixed rugby league tenant — one of several shared Auckland venues (alongside Victoria Park, Devonport Domain) used mainly for representative Auckland matches, before Auckland Rugby League's purpose-built Carlaw Park opened in 1921 and became the code's main local venue.
Sourcing caveat: General web research initially surfaced much larger reported crowds (18,000-40,000) for Auckland-hosted rugby league internationals in this era, which appeared to conflict with our recorded top crowd of 11,000 — this was independently checked directly against Rugby League Project's own venue-specific match ledger, which lists exactly seven matches, all representative Auckland fixtures rather than full international tour matches, with a genuine top crowd of 11,000 (21 May 1921). The larger reported crowds almost certainly refer to separate touring-side matches at other Auckland venues of the period, not to games played at the Domain itself. Capacity, floodlights and exact playing-surface details specific to the rugby league era were not confirmed.

Rugby league history
In the 1910s and early 1920s, Auckland rugby league had no purpose-built stadium of its own, rotating its biggest fixtures among several public grounds. Auckland Domain hosted the representative Auckland side's largest home matches across seven games from 1917 to 1922 — against Canterbury, the Rest of New Zealand, a Universities side, and a wartime charity fixture against military representatives — with gate receipts from these games reportedly helping fund a permanent home ground. That ground, Carlaw Park, opened in 1921, and rugby league's use of the Domain receded soon after, matching the end of this venue's recorded window in 1922. Note: this era's biggest touring-international rugby league crowds in Auckland (Great Britain and Australia touring-side matches reported at 18,000-40,000) are not part of this venue's own match record and most likely took place at other Auckland grounds of the period, not here.
