Coychurch Road

Bridgend, Bridgend, Wales

Coychurch Road, Bridgend, Wales — opened Not confirmed for the ground itself, 14 rugby league games hosted, home of Bridgend Blue Dragons (Rugby Football League Second Division), for the 1984-85 season only.

Sourcing caveat: This venue is not the same ground as Brewery Field, home of the later, unrelated professional club Celtic Crusaders (2005-2009); the two should not be confused despite both being Bridgend rugby league tenancies at different times.

Rugby league history

A non-league association football ground that briefly hosted professional rugby league for a single season, 1984-85, when Bridgend Blue Dragons — a club forced to relocate here from Ninian Park, Cardiff, after being bought out of liquidation earlier that year as Cardiff City Blue Dragons — played its only season of Rugby Football League Second Division fixtures here, with attendances collapsing from 1,983 at the opener to 148 by the final home game. The Rugby Football League dropped the club from fixtures before the 1985-86 season for failing to secure a ground, and the club ceased to exist by 1986.

Bridgend Town A.F.C. continued to use the ground for many years afterward, finally vacating in 2006 to make way for a supermarket development, after which the ground no longer existed in its former form.
