Rugby league history
Whangārei's historic rugby league venue, hosting Northland provincial and representative sides against a long run of touring international teams from 1934 to 1988, including Great Britain, Australia, the USA, France and Papua New Guinea. The ground fell into disrepair after competitive rugby league lapsed there for over a decade (last competitive match around 2009), attracting anti-social issues, before a restoration effort led by former player Riki Shelford saw rugby league return in April 2022.
