Ground facts

Opened1902-03 (as a public sports/showground site) (Rugby League Project lists this venue's region simply as 'Auckland,' but all three recorded matches are North Auckland/Northland representative fixtures, and the only well-documented Kensington Park with this history is in Whangarei, not Auckland city -- this identification is treated as highly probable, reflecting Northland rugby league's historical administration under the wider Auckland structure, but is not explicitly confirmed by any source. The land was purchased by the Whangarei Agricultural & Pastoral Society in 1902-03 (sources give slightly different exact months) and sold to Whangarei Borough Council in 1919, becoming public land thereafter.)

Name history

    Rugby league history

A Whangarei park (almost certainly the venue behind this entry, per the caveat above) whose heritage-listed 1903 grandstand, designed by architect Edward Bartley, is a Category 1 New Zealand Heritage-listed structure, later relocated and restored for the Northland Hockey Association. Originally an agricultural show and horse-racing venue, it hosted three interwar representative rugby league fixtures: North Auckland vs Auckland (1928), Northland vs a touring Eastern Suburbs side (1931, crowd 2,000, the top figure recorded on this site), and Northland vs West Coast (1933). No rugby league tenancy exists there today; the modern Kensington Sports Park precinct hosts hockey, netball, athletics, cricket, soccer and tennis. No capacity, floodlight or playing-surface information specific to its rugby league era was found.
