Rugby league history
Llynfi Road, known locally as 'the Old Parish', is the historic home of Maesteg RFC, a Welsh rugby union club, and briefly hosted greyhound racing before the Second World War. Its rugby league use was incidental rather than a settled tenancy: a 2009 European Cup ranking double-header (Italy v Serbia and Lebanon v Ireland) was staged here, and in 2014 South Wales Scorpions used it for a Challenge Cup tie against Hemel Stags that drew the ground's recorded top crowd of 213. An arson attack destroyed the clubhouse's sponsors' lounge and memorabilia in August 2013, shortly before that Challenge Cup match.
