Ground facts
| Opened | 1923 (The site has hosted organised sport since 1906 as the "Eastern Sports Ground"; a concrete stadium opened in 1923 and was renamed Loftus Versfeld in 1932, honouring Robert Loftus Owen Versfeld, a pioneer of organised sport in Pretoria. Our directory's town field reads "Pretoria (Germiston)" -- this is very likely inherited from a malformed location string on Rugby League Project's own venue page, independently confirmed via direct fetch to read literally "Germiston, Pretoria" (two distinct Gauteng towns roughly 50km apart). No evidence of a second, genuinely Germiston-based "Loftus Versfeld" was found; this is the well-known Pretoria stadium.) |

Rugby league history
South Africa's major rugby union stadium in Pretoria hosted a single rugby league international on 19 October 2000, when South Africa lost 12-40 to Wales in front of a reported 6,000 -- a small fraction (roughly 12%) of the ground's true capacity. Wikipedia's South Africa national rugby league team page independently corroborates the date, teams and 12-40 scoreline but records the attendance as unknown, so the 6,000 figure currently rests on Rugby League Project alone. Notably, this was not South Africa's best-attended rugby league fixture ever -- an estimated 9,900 saw Great Britain play a Rugby League South Africa XIII at Pilditch Stadium, also in Pretoria, in 1962.
