Rugby league history
On 14 August 1928, a Buller regional representative side lost 3-72 to the touring England (Northern Union) rugby league team in front of 3,000 fans, the only match Rugby League Project records at this venue. This was a typically lopsided provincial fixture of the kind England's touring sides regularly ran up against small West Coast unions during that era, notable chiefly as the only recorded top-level rugby league fixture ever played at this Westport ground.
