Name history
Rugby league history
The Wern is primarily the rugby union home of Merthyr RFC since 1958, redeveloped in 2016 with a new 4G pitch, floodlights and a 700-seat stand. South Wales Ironmen, a rebrand of the South Wales Scorpions rugby league club, relocated there for the 2017 season only, taking advantage of the newly upgraded facilities, before rebranding again as West Wales Raiders and moving its base to Llanelli.
