Rugby league history

Rugby League Project records one match at this venue: an Inter-District fixture on 20 August 1921, in which South Auckland beat Auckland 13-3 in front of 2,000 fans. This came right at the birth of organised rugby league in the Waikato region -- the South Auckland Rugby League had only been constituted four months earlier, on 28 April 1921 -- making this one of the new sub-union's first representative fixtures against the dominant Auckland side. South Auckland Rugby League later became Hamilton Rugby League, merging in 1983 with Waikato Rugby League to form the modern Waikato Rugby Football League.
