Name history
Rugby league history
Western Springs Stadium is best known as Auckland's speedway venue (hosting the Speedway Grand Prix of New Zealand from 2012 to 2014, before speedway relocated away from the site in 2025) and as a major concert venue, built within a natural amphitheatre on land purchased by Auckland City Council in 1875. Its rugby league history is limited to two widely separated episodes: two 1941 wartime fixtures (All Golds matches against South Auckland and New Zealand Maori) after the Auckland Rugby League allocated the ground for use that year, and a single 2009 NSW Cup match between the Auckland Vulcans and Balmain-Ryde, played away from the Vulcans' usual Mount Smart Stadium home.
