Rugby league history
A small, community-scale but historically significant rugby league ground, its 1954 Kiwis v Great Britain Test a notable curiosity in world rugby league history given the tiny capacity relative to a full international fixture. Also hosted New Zealand v New Zealand Residents (2006) and, on 5 Feb 2011, an NZ Warriors v Newcastle Knights NRL pre-season trial run explicitly as a fundraiser for the West Coast region following the Pike River Mine disaster (Nov 2010) — a crowd of 6,500, the highest recorded at the venue since 2003 and the last major documented event there. Remains the region's dedicated rugby league venue and grand final host today.
