Club Background
The Hunter Mariners were unveiled in July 1995 and played a single season, 1997, as a rebel Super League franchise set up by News Limited during the Super League War specifically to rival the ARL-aligned Newcastle Knights for the Hunter region. They played out of Topper Stadium at Birmingham Gardens, spending over $1 million upgrading the ground, but folded after just one year when Super League and the ARL reunified into a single competition that could not sustain two Newcastle-based clubs; a proposed merger with the Gold Coast Chargers collapsed and the club was dissolved in late 1997, with players such as Brett Kimmorley moving on to the brand-new Melbourne Storm.

Club history
The Hunter Mariners were unveiled in July 1995 and took the field for a single season, 1997, as a rebel Super League franchise created by News Limited during the Super League War, established specifically to compete for the Newcastle/Hunter region against the ARL-aligned Newcastle Knights. The Mariners played out of Topper Stadium at Birmingham Gardens, investing over $1 million upgrading the ground.
On the field they punched well above their weight, beating English champions Wigan and reaching the 1997 World Club Challenge final (lost to Brisbane). Off the field they had no such success: once the Knights won the 1997 ARL premiership and Super League/ARL reunified into one 20-team NRL for 1998, the competition could not sustain two Newcastle-based clubs. A proposed merger with the Gold Coast Chargers collapsed, and the Mariners were quietly dissolved in late 1997 — many players, including Brett Kimmorley, moved to the brand-new Melbourne Storm for 1998.
