Club Background

Keighley Cougars is an English rugby league club based at Cougar Park in Keighley, West Yorkshire, founded on 17 October 1876 as a rugby union club, before switching codes to join the Northern Union on 12 April 1900 — after the Union's 1895 founding, not among its original members. Historically a modest, middle-to-lower-tier club, its headline achievement remains reaching the 1937 Challenge Cup Final (lost 18-5 to Widnes) — its only major final appearance. The club was excluded from the inaugural Super League in 1995 and has never played top-flight rugby league; it currently competes in the second tier following the RFL's 2026 merger of the Championship and League 1 divisions.

Club history

Founded in October 1876, the club settled at Lawkholme Lane and switched to rugby league via the Northern Union on 12 April 1900 — five years after the Union's 1895 formation, so Keighley were not a founding member, contrary to a common assumption. In the early Northern Union era, Keighley topped the second division in 1902-03 and reached a Challenge Cup semi-final in 1904.

The club's peak came in the 1930s: bolstered by New Zealand half-back Ted Spillane, Keighley reached the 1937 Challenge Cup Final, losing to Widnes. Their record attendance (14,500) came for a 1951 Challenge Cup tie against Halifax.

The postwar decades brought decline and severe financial instability: a 1985-86 winding-up order (averted by selling the club's training pitch), and a 1990-91 rebrand from "Keighley" to "Keighley Cougars," with Lawkholme Lane renamed Cougar Park. Despite winning the Second Division in 1994-95, the club was excluded from the breakaway Super League in 1995 and has never played in it. Financial collapse followed in 1996, and the club was dissolved and reformed more than once (2001, and again as "Keighley Cougars (2010) Ltd" after a 2009 administration). In the modern era Keighley has bounced between the Championship and League 1, winning League 1 undefeated in 2022 before immediate relegation in 2023. For 2026, the RFL merged the Championship and League 1 into a single second-tier competition, meaning Keighley's 2026 "Championship" status reflects league restructuring rather than an on-field promotion.

Sourcing caveat: Keighley were NOT a founding Northern Union member in 1895 — they joined on 12 April 1900. The club's 2026 return to "Championship" level is a result of the RFL's 2026 divisional merger, not an on-field promotion — Keighley actually finished second-bottom of League 1 in 2025.
