Leigh Leopards — 0 Super League/British top-flight titles on record.

Club Background

Leigh RFC was founded in 1878 in Leigh, Greater Manchester, and joined the breakaway Northern Union (rugby league's forerunner) in 1895. The club has played several grounds over the years, settling at Hilton Park from 1947 to 2009 before moving into its current home, Leigh Sports Village, in 2009. Nicknamed "Leigh Centurions" from 1995, the club rebranded to Leigh Leopards in October 2022 under owner/chairman Derek Beaumont, switching to black-and-white colours as part of a push to make a return to the top flight stick after three prior relegations. Honours include two league championships (1905-06, 1981-82) and three Challenge Cups, most recently a 17-16 extra-time win over Hull KR at Wembley in 2023.

Club history

Leigh RFC was established in 1878, playing its first fixture at Buck's Farm in Pennington before moving through several early grounds and settling at Mather Lane from 1889. In 1895, like many northern clubs, Leigh broke away from the RFU over player payments and joined the Northern Union, the forerunner of rugby league. The club's first major success came with the league championship in 1905-06, and its first Challenge Cup in 1920-21, beating Halifax 13-0. Leigh moved to Hilton Park in 1947, where it played until 2009.

Under coach Alex Murphy the club enjoyed its strongest post-war era, winning the Challenge Cup in 1970-71 and the league championship in 1981-82 — its most recent top-flight title. Since the introduction of Super League in 1996, Leigh has bounced repeatedly between the top tier and the Championship: promoted in 2004-05, relegated again in 2005 after winning only two games; back-to-back Championship titles in 2014 and 2015 that didn't convert into promotion; automatic promotion in 2016 followed by immediate relegation; a 2021 Super League place inherited after Toronto Wolfpack's withdrawal from the competition, ending in relegation after a two-win season; and finally promotion back in 2022 after winning the 1895 Cup and beating Batley in the Million Pound Game. The club moved into Leigh Sports Village in 2009.

Following the 2022 promotion, owner Derek Beaumont rebranded the club from Leigh Centurions to Leigh Leopards, switching from red to black-and-white — explicitly framed as part of a strategy to make the top-flight stay permanent, rather than any confirmed symbolic origin for "Leopards." Since returning, Leigh has stabilised in Super League, finishing 5th in both 2023 and 2024, and won the Challenge Cup in 2023, beating Hull KR 17-16 after extra time (Lachlan Lam kicking the winning drop goal) under head coach Adrian Lam. In 2025, Leigh beat Wakefield Trinity 26-10 in the Eliminator to reach a Semi-Final against Wigan Warriors for the second year running, but lost 18-6 and were eliminated short of the Grand Final.

Sourcing caveat: The specific reasoning behind choosing "Leopards" as the new identity in 2022 is not confirmed in any source checked — Beaumont cited commercial research but no named origin story. Treat any claim of a specific symbolic origin for the nickname as unconfirmed.
